children and then we would
sing with a choir or make a
guest appearance in a church

"Then she would train u me
more. I began playing when I
was 10 and writing when I wa

the only current all-female vocal
group distinguished by their
familiar perfect blend the names

Grant, Al Green, Andrae
Crouch, the Mighty Cloud of
Joy, Sandi Patti, Je Dixon,
and Leon Patillo among other .
In 1972 they recorded their
fir t album, "Jesus Ha A Lot
To Give," for Uncle Bill 0 s'
Bille Records in their native
Detroit. They were then signed
by the Detroit label, Sound of
Gospel, and recorded their al­
bum "A Praying Spirit."
By 1981 their album "Is
y living In Vain" on ew
Birth Record was number one
for 9 month on Billboard
agazine's Gospel chart. The)'
were voted "Best Female Gospel
Group of the Year" by Record
World Magazine.
In 1982 the album wa
named "Best Contemporary
Gospel Album" by the Gospel

Songwriter of 'the Year" for
the album, "A Praying Spirit."

there," continued Twinkie.
The Clar Sister went along
for their fir tour to London
and Birmingham, England, and
Hamburg, Germany a well a an

But, it was in '1983 that
"You Brought The Sunshine"
wa released. Recorded in
1982 on Sound Of Gospel
Record , it went on' to become
a cro -over international hit
o year after it wa released.
The hit brought them ch
attention they recorded their
fir Sunny Delight Oran e Juice
radio commercial which ran in
the key 39 market. Thi was
followed by their second tour
of Great Britain and e
Germany, and even Disneyland.
Wherever they toured, they
always received high media ac­
claim and thunderous crowd
approval. After all, they were
the only uper high-energy
female group on tage presenting
such a distinctive tight vocal
blend.
By 1984 they appeared twice
in London, including' The Ro
Gospel Show" ho ted for BBC­
TV by Sheila Walsh, appeared
again at Disneyland a well as
Disneyworld, and recorded their
cond orange juice commer­
cial. Other than Al Green,
they have b en the only Gospel
artists al consistently record-
ing commercial . ,
They went on to receive
Ebony agazine's Image Award
for "Bes Gospel" Performance"
with Twinkle al nominated
for "Song of the Year" for
"You Brought The Sunshine"
against competition which in­
cluded winner Gladys Knight
for "Save The Overtime For
e."
However, the year's highlight
was a Grammy nomination for
their album "Sincerely" on
Benson Records.
The Clar Sisters performed
on the 1985 Grammy Awards
telecast were in ited to per­
form by the City of Los ngeles
at the Olympi Velodrome
appeared in the Kool Jazz
Festival in South Hampton,
VA. and on the 22nd edition
of Essence agazine's TV show.
In 1986 they have been
guests of both the State De­
partment in Washington, D. .
and the City of Los ngele
for the birthday celebrations
for Dr. artin Luther Kin ,
Jr., as well a participating in
the Go pel usic Association's
Dove ward telecast in ash-
ville Tenn.
Their vocal blend is so
clo no individual voice t nds
out from another.
