Drugs: A problem with no solution
By Dr. Char e W. Faulkner
ASHI GTO NPA)
The death of Len Bias will
probably not deter a single
individual from using drug -
nor will any of the other popular
propo d solutions. Here are
some of tho proposals and
their problems.
De elop thou d of neigh
borhood drug. education centers
cro th country, primarily
for people who have never used
drugs. Education and coun l
ing for people who abuse drug
is of questionable value. There
is one line of thinking which
argues that coun ling drug
abu rs is usele. The high
that one gets from crack orne
people mix crac with PCP)
has been equated with "ten
simulataneous sexual orgasms."
Drug-abu r do not fear the
negative con equences of their
act becau of their desire for
the high. Sugar Ray Richard

jeopardizing their basketball
careers by usin cocaine. Len
Bias knew of others who had
died from drug overdoe .
When a particularly high
potency batch of heroin caused
ven drug overdo death in a
single day in Washington, DC
last year, a newspaper reporter
ed a drug addi t how fearful
he wa of making a purcha .
The addict' response was
man, you may think I'm
crazy but I can't wait to get
my hands on some of that
beautiful stuff."
Put pushers and d le in
jail, mand torily. This sug-
gestion has its detractor becau
of the abundance of drug
pushers. The selling of illicit
drugs gross more money in the
United States than any other
business. There are thousand
of pushers on the streets of
ew York, Los Angele, ash
ington, DC and other major
cities, on any given day. There
are hundreds of others waiting
to take their places should
they be arrested. For many
poor Americans and illegal
alien Sf selling drugs is the
only job that they will ever
have' it i the only way that
they can put food on the table.
The demand for illicit drugs
is 0 great that many pushers
can't eep enough in stoc .
andatory jail sentencing ha
the impact of taking many
criminals and potential criminals
off the reets.
Hospitalize and treat ddi t
ith drug the py. Point:
There is an old saying 'On e
addicted alway addicted."
Alcoholic Anonymous oerate
on this premise. An alcoholi
under treatment is always a
recovering alcoholic. He i
never cured of his need for
liquor and must alway be on
hi guard to defend him If
against the urge. " Of cour
fe alcholoics acknowledge their
addiction. Such al is the ca
with drugs. Once ddicted the
addict never completely re
covers. H could become
"hoo ed" again even after year
of abstinence. Drug therapy
is considered a simply a means
of lengthening the bomb' fu .
It will explode eventually no
matter ho much treatment i
provided. There are not enough
treatment facilitie
