son of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
recently on a seat on the Fulton County (Atlanta) Com­
mi rsion. artin Luther King III defeated the incumbent

ta Monica, Ca.-An expert in vascular disease has
reported that American Blaeks may be genetically
predisposed to high blood pressure because of an unusual
ability to retain salt. Researcher Dr. Clarence Grim of the
Po t Graduate School of Medicine in Los Angele said
preliminary results from a tudy suggest that high blood
pressure is inherited. Grim believes Blacks developed the
ability to retain high levels of salt thousands of years ago in
Africa. Such a retention level was needed in the hot
African un. High blood pressure or hypertension leads to
stro es and heart and kidney failure. Blae s are twice as
li ely as whites to have high blood pressure. In fact, it is
timated that 75 0 of all Blae adult males have high
blood pr sure.
Blae Hebrews Deported
Tel Aviv, Israel- The Isra Ii government recently
deported t 0 member of America's Blac Hebre
religious eel. The Blae Hebre s claim that Blacks ere
the original Je of the Bible. There is a Blac Hebre
community in Israel which frequently finds itself in con­
flict with the government. Blac Hebre leader Ami-Ben
Carter said the t 0 people who ere deported to the U.S.
had been held in detention by the Israelis for more than a
year.

topics of a recent two-day con­
ference held on Capitol Hill to
outline and devise campaign
strategies for tho candidates
competing for seats in the up­
coming November elections.
C. Delores Tuc er, chair of
the Democratic ational
Committee Blac Caucus and
the architect for the brain­
storming meeting, urged the
40 invited political, religious,
social, business and civic
leaders to return their com­
munities and encourage sup­
porters to cast their votes. But
the main thru t of the a­
tional Blae Leadership Fami­
ly assembly was to give voice
and economic support to
Black candidates who would
otherwise have limited finan­
cial resources to run for
political office.
"We do not ant to repeat
the Ies ons of the post:
reconstruction era," said
Tucker arning the audience.
"I'm tired of thi struggle but
as long as you're moving down
the road to freedom, I'm with
you."
Members of the Congres­
sional Blac Caucus and the
Democratic ational Commit­
tee, co-sponsors for the a­
tional Blac Leadership Fami­
ly conference, updated the
group on their various ac­
tivities on the Hill and offered
support.
William H. Gray III
(D-Pa-2), chairman of the
House Budget Committee,
stre sed the need for more
Blac political officials and
talked about the declining
economy.
"I know we've been told
that America is bac and
everything is rosy," he said.
"But in reality, if we 100 at
t e economic indicators we do
not a rosy economy.
Deficits are not good for
economic growth, job creativi­
ty and productivity. They have
a negative effect on those
situated at the end of the
economic totem pole."

didates running for the
enate and Congre . to re­
cruit and train you Blac pro­
fe ionals for invol ement in
the political proce ; and to
create an i ue-oriented
re earch and policy fellow
program at a Blac colleg in
the honor of Rep. Augustu F.
.Hawkins (D-Ca.)
"When you lift up your
leader hip, you lift up your
people," said Hill. "This is
