of consumer goods at up to
40% below retail value if you
are a member of one of the
nation's veral consumer buying
rvices.
Such rvices have been en-
abled their members to get
nice car for a much a 5,000
off the car dealer's price.
Although con mer buying
rvices are by no means the
answer to all your purchase
needs, they can help you get
significantly more buying
power out of each dollar you
have to spend. However, i is
interesting that only a relative­
ly small number of Americans
belong to such services.
The probable reason is that
only a relatively few Ameri­
cans kno about them.
Before introducing you to
ome of these buying ervi e
let me first tell you a little
about them.
There is a consumer buying
service for ju t about every
purpose, You name it and then
is a service mewhere whi h
can purcha it for you at dis-­
counts rangin from 20% to
50% below retail value. ost
rvices will charge you a yearly
membership fee. You can order
good by phone. And a few
con umer buying rvices even
have credit plan for major
purchases.
The major drawback to such
services is that many of them
limit who can join. Some
rvices do not ccept individual
members and only deal with
employees of a company or
members of an organization
which join a a group.
An example of this is the
United Buying Service. UBS
claims it gets di ounts of up
to 60% on a wide variety of
con umer items. In addition,
it does not charge a member­
ship fee. But you can only
take advantage of the service
if your company or organiza-
