I nviting Illusions'
By Larry Carter
Just because a person own
a hair brush and pair of clip
per it doe not m e him or
her cosmetologist. Just
obert Burrell, owner of Kal -
mazoo Beauty Academy:
"You can buy vegetable,'
he ys, "but if you can't cook,
the meal is not going to be
inviting. "
And turning out profe ional
cosmetologi s who now how
to m e you 100 'inviting'
is what the Kalamazoo Beauty
c demy has been doing for
the p st 25 years.
The art of cosmetology is
intricately connected with the
fashion. industry 0 that each
fit and start - whether it origi
nate from the west coast, the
ea co ,or as far away' as
Europe - i clo ly watched
by theKBA.
"It is a constantly changing
indu try," ys Burrell. "Pre-
gist mu complete 150 cloc
hour of training in a lieen d
institution ch the Kalama
zoo Beauty Academy before he
or she can graduate with a
diploma. The graduate, then,
must send her papers to Lansing,
Michigan where they are proces-
d and a date is arranged for
the udent to take her state
board examination in Detroit.
"It can be an anxious
moment," say Rita Thomas,_
who received her license ay
16, 1984 after completing the
one-year course in ten months.
"I practiced up until the time
1 was to take the test, however,
and by then, I was confident."
Indeed, Rita proved to be
uch an exceptional tudent that
management at the KBA asked
her to stay on as an instructor.
'That meant 600 more hours,
and another state exam," Rita
says. "But 1 was ready for that
as well."
