Losing eight can be confus
ing, difficult and disappointing
but I am going to help m e
it simple, easy and overwhelm
ingly satisfying. You have
three choices: I t is perfectly
within y ur right to eat any
f d you wish and gain as
much weight as you want· or,
you can 10 e weight, keep the
same eating habits that cau d
you to gain weight in the first
place and get fat again; or,
you can 10 weight and keep
it off foreve . It's your decision.
If you continue to consume
fattening food , you will con
tinue to put undue tre on
your heart, kidney and lung ;
in ddition you might be con-
uming far too much chole
terol that could block the
arterie leading to the heart
and increase your ri of a
stro e or heart attack. Being
overweight has a double risk.
Foods hold two major dan
gers for the overweight person.
First the weight puts abnormal
and potentially dangerous stress
on the heart, kidneys and liver
by overworking them. ext
many popular foods contain
large amounts of cholesterol and
alt. Chole terol, a thick grea -
like substance that can become
much like lard, can collect in
the arteries leading to the
heart, temporarily block the
flow of blood to the heart,
and cause a seizure, stroke or
t
heart attack. People who con-
sume foods fried in animal fat,
who are overweigh and who do
not get much exercise are in a
high ri group of people likely
to have a stroke or heart
attack. You can, of cour ,
have a troke or heart attac
even if you are not overweight.
Cholesterol and salt are the
enemies.
In order to decrease choles
terol in the arteries you must
get exerci (which tend to
force deposits of fat from the
rteries by increasing the
amount and pre sure of blood
going through .he arteries
and you must decrea the
amount of cholesterol that i
consumed. Start eating more
fruits, vegetables and other
foods that are low in animal
fats. This will decrease blood
cholesterol and body fat at the
same time. Obviously the
human body does not manu
facture fat, so if you don't con-
ume it, you won't be troubled
by it.
Erik . Washington
Dear Erik,
y husband and I have been
separated for almost five
months. During that time I
moved out of our home and
into a mall but nice apartment
of my own. He would call me
on the telephone and berate
me and tell me that he ha
found a youn er and better
looking woman to love. I would
always end up in tear , feeling
bad and orry for myself.
Becau I till love him. ell
three day a 0 he called and he
told me how sorry he wa for
the way he _had been treat in
me and that he had lied ab ut
seeing another woman. He
also aid that he anted us to
try to get back together. But
the mo t important thing that he
said wa the he still I ved me. I
want him back but I am a little
afraid of his quick temper. e
have had fights before and there
hav been times when he has
been real mean to me. I was
thinking that thi time I would
just agree to everything he
says and try hard to do every
thing just the way he wants it.
Its means that I have to change
the way I am and I don't know
how.
"Genna",
Salt tends to increa the
blood pressure. ost over
weight people consume foods
that contain entirely too much
salt, and often add even more
salt to their foods. High blo d
pres ure can cau strokes and
heart attac s. The human body
does not manufacture salt 0 if
you do not consume it you
won't have it in your system.
If you are serious about
losing weight permanently re-
duce your caloric intake
increa your phy ical activity
and change your eating habits.
The last factor is most im
portant becau , even if you
lose weight then resume the
same eating habits you had
before.
