Es ablish ing a
f ancial plan
By James Nathan
The first tep on the path to
financial ecurity is to have job
or regular source of income.
However, financial planning
experts have e timated that the
overwhelming majority of jobs
(90 per cent or more) can not, by
themselve , guarantee a person
financi I ecurity. In other
ords it do not make a dif
ference ho much you work
mo t job imply do not pay
enough to provide per on ith
financial peace of mind.
The re ult . that most
American find them elve not
more than one or 0 p ychec s
from financial di ster. And the
ituation or the vast majority of
u is the common practice of
"living p check to paycheck."
The tarting point for e cap
ing thi rut and putting greater
financial ecurity into your life
is to establish for your elf a
Financial Plan.
The immediat goal of that
plan is to put your elf in a situa
tion whereby in 12 to 18 months
you ould have created a "fall
back fund" equal to three mon
ths of your current pay. For
example, if your current mon
thly take-home pay is $2,000, a
properly constructed financial
plan ould have allowed you to
ve '6,000 ithout major sac
rifice ithin 12 to 18 months.
Some would call this an
"emergency fund." But it can
be u ed for any purpo e you
decide - a trip to the Caribbean
or a mink coat. Ho ever, the
re on it' frequently referred
to an emergency fund is that
it chief purpo e is to give you
the financial peace of mind of
kno ing that if you are ever
without a job or your regular
source of income is interrupted
you ill be able to meet your
regular expenses for at least
three months without a worry.
We have developed a 5-page
financial analy is form which we
think ill help most people
establish the type fall-bac or
emergency de cribed above.
The accompanying instructions
will en ble you to conduct a elf-
nalysis of your financial situa
tion. Based on that analy is you
hould be able to adopt a finan
cial plan that will allow you to
save three times your current
. monthly income within 12 to 18
months. The information is
free. Simply include $1.50 to
cover mailing costs.
Once an emergency fund has
been established, the next step
on the path to financial security
is to look into investigating or
starting a part- time bu iness.
Unless you are fortunate
enough to occupy one of the
relatively fe jobs that provide
financial ecurity, you will not
chieve financial security with
out either investing or starting a
busine of your 0 a
In next eek' column, e
ill look into these next steps
on the path to fmancial secu-
rity. •
Meanwhile, if you would like
to get tarted on the financial
plan send for our free financial
analysis form: Law- Tay Com
munications, P.O. Box 54041,
Washington, DC 20032. Please
include $1.50 to cover mailing
costs.
