The agreement which as ratified earlier in the d y by the Covert Education A ciation, includes ven percent raise for all teacher for each of the three ears of the contract. Super­ intendent lfred Hawkins com­ mented that the "negotiations ent very smoothly this year." The lary range in the cur­ rent chool year for a teacher with a bachelor's degree and no ,";"!nce t a teacher with a master's degree and 15 years experience is from 15,709 to 29478. The 7 pe ent rai e will increase the range from 16,809 to 31 ,541 the first year; from 18,796 to 33,749 the second year and from 20 112 to 36,111 the third year. Other changes in the con­ tract include a SOO-a-year raise for teacher who have completed five years of teaching and the reduction of the number of steps necessary to reach the top salary ranges in all categorie . Hammond formally announced that he is a candidate to ucceed Judge Julian Hughes a Berrien County Circuit Court Judge. Judge Hammond wa first elected District Judge in 1968 uming his seat in 1969. He h been re-elected to that position twice since. He has rved on numerou commit­ tees in the ichigan District Judge Association and has held all m "�or offices, including pre '­ dent in 198 ... 85. A member of the Judicial Council of the Judicial Conference of ichi­ gan 1982-1986, and of everal committees of the American Bar ssociation Hammond h held all officer positions includin Chairman 1970-80 of the Criminal Law" Section of the State Bar of ichigan. Judge Hammond was elected Prosecuting Attorney of Berrien County in 1964 and served as Prosecuting Attorney from 1965 to 1969. Judge Hammond i a grad- uate of the University of Michi­ gan and received his law degree from the University of ichigan Law School. He was a Faculty dvisor to the ational Judicial College in 1981 and is a diplo­ mate of the ational College of the State Judiciary and the ational Judicial College. Judge Hammond has been dmitted to practice before the ichigan Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the S. Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
