The time to test drive your
ne car is not only before you
rna e your purchase, but al in
the months that follow. any
people never take a test drive
after taking posse ion of new
automobile. For som reason
they believe good or bad they
re tuc with their investment.
This isn't nece sarily so.
E ch tim you take your
car on the road, it's a good idea
to be alert for any sign of
trouble. This i e pecially
important during the warranty
period.
en you take a drive,
lect routes that are familiar
and include in your trip mooth
high ays a ell bumpy
roads. Remember that when
you ere invited to take a road
test, chances are you were
driving a different car or a
different model. ow that you
have po ion of your own
car, numb r of faults may
be apparent. You may have
trouble 10 ating them unle
you gi e the car a real work
out.
Initially, try this test when
you're lone on theopen road:
cceler te n rmally, and then
floor the ccelerator. Both
geta ay hould be sm oth
and effortless. A well engineer-
ed carburetor ill alIo no
"flat spots' the car gain
peed. The cceleration rate
t full bore is a key to the
torque output of the engine.
If your engine ms too
noisy on the road or at idle
pay a quick visit ot your car
dealer. There s no reason why
you shouldn t have a quiet
engine. In me cases, noisy
engine are defective; in others,
only an adjustment is required.
Here's another way to deter
mine engine response: en
you're on the road driving at
about 50 mph, decelerate. Then
hit the accelerator. Engine
response ould be simultaneous.
If you fail to get a split-second
re pon , it's reason enough to
visit your dealer with warranty
in hand.
Try to brakes. Is there a
tendency to "grab?' Doe
the car stop with an objection
abl body dive or pitch? Check
brakes several times in succes-
ion. See if they have any
tendency to fade.
Be sure to include tho
rough bac roads in your test.
The m re hard tum on the
route the better. This will
make it po ible to perform a
true test of how the r handles.
ote if the car take hard turns
without excessive body lean;
if prings and shock soak
up umps and potho s.
ote a1 0 any rattles or
other irregularities in the way
the car perform from time
to time. When you locate a
minor fault, make a list and
show it to your dealer next
time you have the car rviced.
And b fore he pre nts you with
th bill, make ure you know
what your warranty covers.
