While doctors are treating the disease the rest of us deal with the stresses that a diagnosis of cancer can bring. " " eer p tlen need a hopeful attitude - eO treatment d p ctlcaI help." "We help patients cope with depression and changing family roles. And we arrange fo financial assistance if they need it Our dietitians work with patients and their families to plan for gcxxl nutrition. The physical and occupational therapists help patients return to regular activities. And we work to encourage and support the family so that they 'can help the patient" "PatJen need the rt of &i and famlIy." "Cancer treatment can be overwhelming. It is a dif6cult time. It's easier if patients can stay in their own community. The Cancer Care Center has sutgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy - cancer treat ments that you would find in a larger medical center- right here. And because we're smaller, there's an intimacy here, a personal touch. " "We not only care for e p tlen e care for their family and &Ie too." "Our regular education groups keep patients and families informed about cancer treatmen nutrition, stress management and how to get help from community agencies. , And the whole Cancer Care Center team is available to all our cancer patients - in the hospital or as out-patients. We get to know our patients and their families well. And they get to know us. They know we are friends they can depend on. " The Cancer Care Center is one of the services of the Southwestern Michigan Health Care Association. Other specialized centers at Mercy and Memorial hospitals also offer coordinated education, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care. It's all part of a comprehensive approach to better community health. Ann Wazdatskey is one of more than 1,400 people who work at Memorial and Mercy hospitals to provide sophisticated - and com passionate - medical services.
