Fe motorists realize they
are hauling cat under their
car - a very quiet cat that
i n't likely to give them much
trouble unle it' mistreated or
bu d.
To rno , the "cat" is
known the catalytic con-
rter, a part of the exhaust
system that has been around
since 1975. A catalytic con
verter chemically change ex
haust gase into le harmful
one , and it erve a a primary
anti-pollution device. It'
major improvement over it
predecessor which tended to
reduce g mileage significantly
and m e the engine run rough.
If your car is equipped
wi n converter, usually in-
talled along the exhaust pipe, .
certain engine malfunctions,
e pecially tho that involve
the electrical, carburetion or
ignition system could result in
large amounts of unburned fuel.
This causes the converter to
reach elevated temper tures.
When this occur, discontinue
operation of the car should
the engine misfire or if notice
able 10 of performance or
other unusual operating condit
ions are detected. The b t
thing to do is to bring your
car to your dealer or orne
other competent ervice facility,
Depo 't, of leaded gasoline
can coa the catalyst, inter
fering with the conver ion pro-
cess, and often causing serious
damage to the sy tern. It J
illegal to tamper with any
emission control sy te , in
cluding enlarging the g oline
filler neck to allo the nozzle
for le ded fuels to be used.
Also, it' important to keep
an eye on the fuel gage ince
running out of fuel could
cause pennenent damage to the
c talytic converter. And re
frain from racing the engine.
Some cars require spark'
plug changes more frequently
than the milea interval re
commended by the manuf c
turers. Regular ignition sy em
maintenance and prompt diag
no" and repair of a rough
running engine keep "cats"
healthy.
Be careful here you park
your car since catalytic con
verters often g t very hot.
Do not top or park the
vehicle over inflammable
m terials, such dry grass,
waste paper, or rags that may
come into contact with the
exhaust system.
To rut costs, write for a
copy of Ray Hite's informative
booklet, "101 Ways To Save
Money On Your Car." For
each copy end 50 cents to
cover cost of handling and
