Repre ntatives from area churches gathered at Bethe da, 575 Getty, for an ecumenical observance of King's birthday. . According to Bethesda Pastor Rev. Charles Poole, the ervice wa an effort to inspire people to carry on King's dream. Rev. Poole said the King programs his church ha spon­ sored over the year were intented to eep alive in the young people a con ciousne of the heritage of Bla k p ople. At Tuesday nights service, people from all denominations and racial groups gathered to denomstrate the brotherho d King preached. The Muskegon County Clergy Fellowship were co-sponsors of the service. Speakers include: Rev. Donald athews of F rist Presbyterian Church; John Sydnor super­ intendent of uskegon Heights Public Schools, and Rev. Poole. Cynthia Shyne san "Precious Lord, ' King's favorite. The project will create 25 . construction jobs and 25 per- manent jobs. The project is another step of the current administration toward its goal of job develop­ ment and economic revitaliza­ tion according to city mana­ ger Joseph Charlton. The Council approval clears MESC offices closed for King holiday, Jan 21 Michigan Employment Secur­ ity Commission ESC) offices across the state will be closed Monday, January 21, in honor of artin Luther King's birth­ day MESC director Richard Simmons Jr. announced today. Approximately 30 000 c1ai­ mants who would normally report to ESC offices on onday that 21 st, will be affected by the holiday closing, he said. Simmons said that MESC began r minding claimants of the office holiday closure last week, however some c1aimants might have inadvertently been scheduled to report on the 21st. 'Claimants who would nor- mally report on the 21 should report to their MESC office any other day during that week" he pointed out. MESC offices will be open for busine s as usual from 8: 15 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 22, through Friday, January 25. ESC issued the reminder to claimants since this is the fir t year the State of ichigan observes King's birthday on the third Monday in January, to correspond with the date set by the federal government as the' national holiday. In previous years the state had observed the Monday nearest January 15 as the holi­ day. the way for the MJDA bond to be sold by the Department of Commerce. The 4.2 million project - including 48 ne motel rooms a new restaurant and an en­ closed swimming pool - is to be financed mainly by 3.8 million tax-exempt bonds i ued by the ichigan Job Develop­ ment Authority, expected to be approved today by the state Department of Commerce. According to the plan, the motel, located at 150 Seaway Drive, will expand onto the adjoining land now occupied by the closed Seasons Restaurant. IT-Tucker Hotels, a St. Louis o.,-based company is the de­ veloper. Days Inn will expand from their persent 104 rooms to 152 rooms. A new restaurant replacing the Seasons will be operated by the motel chain under the same roof as the motel with a new name, Day Break. The expansion project began last year when Days Inn ac­ quired the restaurant property for $2.1 million. The Heights Council last year approved a 12 year l00-percent tax batement on the motel renovation, and a 50-percent abatement of the additional taxes due to the restaurant removeling. . Glensid e Schoo I to help 'Keep the Torch lit' The students at Glenside School are joining the nation­ wide campaign going on to restore the Statue of Uberty. Students will collect Kellogg box tops from cereal boxes 7 oz. or larger. Goal is to collect 2500 box top . Each classroom has a collect­ ion box and there will be three c deadline dates: January 28 February 25 and March 25. The class/classes that collect the most box tops per month will be treated to a "Liberty Party." The Kellogg Company will give an award to Glenside commemorating its achievement. It will al 0 nd a donation to the Statue of Uberty Foun- dation in Glenside's name. Th amount of the donation and type of award will be deter­ mined by how many box top are sent in.
