( In the past, beneficiaries had to request a statement of benefits if they wanted to know how much they h d received in a particular year. Thi year Social Security is sending out atements to everyone because of a new tax law. any beneficiaries will need to know exactly ho much Social Security they received in 1984 when they me their income tax for the year. The 1983 Social Security Amendments provided for the taxing of Social Security bene fits for tho whose income exceeds $25 ()()() as an individ ual, or 32,000 as a couple. Only one out of every ten beneficiaries will have any new tax liability under this law because most p rsons have lower incomes. Tho with higher incomes will need to know the exact amount of Social Security th received in 1984. Social Securit will nd this information to all of the forty million people who received benefits in 1984 be cause they had no way of know- ing who will and will not need the total . Beneficiaries can expect to receive their annual statement (SSA-I099) in mid-January. Beneficiareis who question the amount shown on the statement will be provid d pecial toll free number to call. 1 People who agree with theii Social Security statement, but have questions about their tax liabil ity will be able to call the IRS u ing another toll free number. The toll free number for both Social Security and the IRS will be shown on the annual statement. Social Security anticipates a lot of questions when the 1099's are receivved in January. Hopefully, not all forty million beneficiaries will call our officies or toll free lines. That number of calls would make it impo - sible to properly handle the inquirie of tho e who will have new tax liability. Those who clearly will not have any new tax liability should wait untio after April 15th to rna e inquiries. , PAGE THI RTEE ITH STYLE - Kim Fields, ho h gro n up before million of TV vi we a tar of the BC ri "The Fact of Life", h blo med into lovely and very talented teenager.
