The AACP is proud of its leadership in the Ion rug-
gle again t federally-supported discrimination. The veteran
civil rights organization, which' celebrating i diamond
jubilee this year, is equally proud of it vanguud rol in
every other are of freedom and equality.
The AACP ca upon American of ood ill to
expre their outr e over the fate of the Civil Rights Act
of ) 984 at the polls on 0 ember 6. Such c disregard
for the rights of all Americans as displ yed in the
Senate on October 2, 1984, is not only anachronistic but
it al 0 destroys respect for the hallo ed con itution 1
principl s of justice and equality.
A
children have experienced the dilemma of being
too big for this or too small for that. This is exactly
Fred's prob em is. Fred is too big to play with his
brother Baby Bob but he is also to small to play ·th his
o derbrother Sam. Fred's problem is that be's right in
the middle and he doesn't fit in! Fred's mOther has the
solution. Sb decides to enroll Fred in the Sunshine
School so that he can have friends his own age.
Fred's FITSt Day examines a young child's experience
in defining his role in hislher family structure. It also
deals with the fears a youn child may have upon first
entering school. Cathy Warren and ilustrator Pat Cum
mings (both being middl children) bring a sped sen
sitivity to the subject. Cumminp' colorful ilusttations
complement Fred's story without distracting th youn
reader from its moral.
