Shank wa born in 1948 in Quitman, Missisippi where he attended high school. Shank rved four years in the Air Foree as an aircraft mechanic. Following hi dis­ charge in 1970 he cam to kegon and enrolled in the Sk Training Center. There he ed th distinction of being fir t BI ck student in uto­ mechanics. Whil a udent, he as employed with a tire company orris C. Shan sl LT. and then worked for an auto­ mobile dealer. On December 4, 1974 he was hired y the Fire Department. His advice to young Blacks with a desire for success? Shanks stated Black youth should strive to gain a trade or skill that will provide them with a living.
