JUNE 6 - 12.1984 THE CITIZE
.
Out in Van Bur n County
Choosing Horan over Si ljander
en we talked last week about
"Cro over" oting we were talking
bout' e ,to an end", not am nt in
it If.
If all of u vote in the Republican
Primary, not the Democrat Primary,
and ote for Horan for Congre man it
doe not mean that we prefer a_man
hose name i on all of tho concer e
trucks ithout any Blac drivers or a
man ho w mayor of South Haven
. when the Federal Government ithheld
it Economic Development money be
cau of the city's discrimanatory hiring
licies.
What it doe mean is that we want to
get Congo Siljander out of office first.
Then in the ovember General Election
e vote for the Democrat (ho ever bad
or good he m y be) candidate.
If h wins we will have succeeded
beyond expectations. The next thing
will be to replace him with a better
person "1 0 years from no . If Horan
wins e will win in the sen that he will
be e . er to defe tint 0 years and
even more important he ill not have
the niority in congre that makes one
so detrimental to our cau . If e fail
in defe ting Horan, the experience of
having or ed together in a ommon
cau i beneficial to our long range
goals.
We realize the rules governing politics
are not good they ould be, but
they are the only rule that we h vee So
our job i to use them as b t we can to
our advantage - we repeat "Don't get
mad, Get smart".
OF THE PROPOSALS to be on the
Ballot, Our position on couple of them
are very easy to decide:
-On a new airport in the county,
ho many of are going to benefit
from paying a tax to upport an airport
between Decatur and Paw Paw? How
many job will we obtain? Ho many of
us own airplane ?
-On tax to provide more mney
for the Sherrif' Department - s the
sherrif going to change hi employment
policy after four yean? The areas where
the overwhelming majority of us live
already have local police departments,
so why should we vote to increase ou
taxes? Have you ever seen Black
sherrif's deputy in Van Buren County?
While these three scenarios do not
attempt to deal with aD of the proble s
facing the Black community they at
le try to present an example of the
systematic thinking th t h to be done if
all of our resource are going to be
brought to bear on our common pro
blems.

AFTER THE TRIP TO IRElAND
we are finding out that "Reagan" like all
white Americans is decended from
Royalty. We remember studying in
school about the American colonies being
populated by inmates of English prison
- wonder what happened to their decen
dents? ..
... Have you thought about the fact
that all of thi wonderful talk about
Hi Tech employment, computerization,
minaturization, micromiturazation and
relieving people of dirty, boring, repeti
tive mbly line jobs really add up to
"(1) fewer job and (2) lower pay than
the work were getting before. - With
all of the fancy talk about the high
priced folk , when you get down to it,
whether you like it or not, Hi Tech means
low wage ... Do you remember a little
over four year ago when the people of
Iran decided to "fire the U.s. appointed
Shah" and run their own country? e
ere ured by all of the leading figures
in our government that tho dumb
Iranians couldn't last six months running
\ their 0 n government without som of
"our" folks over there telling them what
to do. Remember, they wouldn't kno
how to get oil out of tile ground if som -
body from here wasn't there to tell them
which way" to turn the faucet. They
couldn't fly their airplane , keep their
tanks running, maintain the machinery,
feed their people or field an army.
Well it seems like they have been able
to do all of these things and more - more
becau our country and ussia (who
u ually don't even want to breathe
the same air) France and all of the other
(so called) leading countries of the world
have together to ann, upport and upply
Iran's neighbor Iraq in a war against
Iran.
We don't know if Iran's decision to
refuse to pply oil to the white supre
macist gov't of South Africa was the
re n for all of the "freedom loving
democracies" to join against them or not
but we do know that our gov't usually
ends up upporting right wing dictator-
hips and anti-Black government any
where they appear - and anytime and
for whatever reason our country and
our country' or nemy Ru ia is
joining hands ain t anybody it warrants
our taking clo r look t the whole
is ue.
The f ct that Iran h been abl to
more than hold it own against
GOO
TI
coalition of countries including the U.S.
and Ru . a means that a lot more than is
being told us is taking place.
t
IT LOOKE UKE we re going to have
to accept the English heritage in Ameri
can life. e had thought that Am rica
was the melting pot of the world but
when one looks at all of the evidence it
is quite apparent that th English in
fluence is much stronger than that of all
of the other nations combined.
Our Re arch Department identified
and evaluated hundreds of traits and
habits brought by all of the cultures that
combined to make up the American
whole. After weighing and c tegorizing
each e ran them thru the computer
ven times. The result in each cas
showed that the English custom of driv
ing on the leftside of the road wa the
strongest and longest la ting habit still
active and prevalent in the people of
America - if you don't believe us ask
your local police departm nt.
Quote: Tho most afraid to die
are usually the ones who have done no
real living.
Did you kno that Thomas Palmore
of Edgell St. is running for a seat on the
South Haven Board of Education on
June list? e don't know why he is
keeping it a secret bu we do hope that
tho who can will go out and rote for
him.
