Out in Va Buren County
ond erful tim to be
live - who would hav thought even one
o today e would be witne ing n
tounding and intere ing a
n' run for the pre idential
nomin ton. After being told often and
uthoritati ely by everybody who was
uppo d to 'no , fter being assured
that he h d no political base, no organiza
tion, no money and no hope of winning,
h did hat ny determined person
ould do - he announced that he wa
unning.
Hi decision wa based on a t of facts ·
were totally different from those of
t e "pro t - he h d been meeting with,
listening to and addre ing the people,
gra root p ople on teady ba is. He
kne of. their hope , fru trations, aspira
tion and degree of .committment. He
ne of the many times that Black people
had been deceived and prevaricated to by
scheming politician, the shattered
dream and broken promise - the feeling
of 'never gain" and "why bother".
-He also kne . of the enthusiastic re
pon to his HI Am Somebody" peeches
by high hool and adult audience alike.
He kne of the warm vibes engendered
_, when he explained the benefits that
ould com to the Black community
from the greement that Operation
PUSH igned with Coca Cola, Burger
eubleins and other major corporations.
He knew too, of the large number of un
regi tered Bl c nationwide who would
remain unregistered unle and until they
ere s ured th t they would have the
opportun y to t for person that
they would want {or president in tead of
voting for the lessor of t 0 evils - a pos
itive rather than a neg tive act - an act
r ther than re ction - vote FOR
mebody, not a vote against omebody
el .
If there is or wa any doubt as to the
I rightn of Rev. Jack on' decision,
,the result, the mass of Blac voters
many newly registered who have come
out in ov rwhelming numbers to vote
for him should lay them to re t (ask
ondale).
- the next que tion to be
answered or at least thought about is,
What happens to thi tremendous Black
vote? How is it to be used, whether
Rev. Jack 'n get the democratic nomina
tion or not. Can it be parlayed into
me concerte advances, a real piece of
the pie rather, than some more crumbs.
Can we remain united long enough for
Rev. Jack n to be able to use the threat
that our numbers repre ent to get some
real conce ions from either one or both
of the major political parties. Can we
remember that until only 50 years
(1932 election) ago that we ere all
Republicans? At that point we found
out that e could m me major
advance by ch nging p rtie which we
did enm . Are we politically mature
enough to realize th t t me point
another chan of direction may become
neee sary. Can e cept the f ct that a
thorough kno led e of the political
game and the cour e to do what has to
be done when it h to be done to who
soever it has to be done to are the ys
to our survival and up rd mobility.
IT SEEMS AS THOUGH one of the
agencies in our county i uffering from a
.bad ca e of twi ed priorities - but
maybe we better give you some back
ground on what took place first. - A
few' weeks ago the Berrien County
Action agency gave me state of ich
gan surplus food another agency -
United Against Hunger. U AH in tum
gave some of the food to the Senior
Activi t Group in Covert who planned
to give it to some needy people in the
area. At this point the Van Cap (the
good guys?) agency got involved. It
eems that they were concerned because
me food was being given away in Van

their hands. obody but Van C p i
t be allowed to give food to poor
people here): Followin their complaint,
the eniors were required to give the food
bac and DCA wa told in effect to keep
their cotton picking hands out of V n
Buren County, this is Van Caps "turf.'
Our Re arch Department immediate
ly ent into action. Rodney (remember
him) who now heads the Surplus Food
Division rushed ome of the food to the
well equiped laboratory at Van Buren
State College where it was checked for
vermin, bugs, insects and vitamin B.
It pa ed with flying colors. ext he
checked with the State Ag Dept people.
They said the food was good, it just
needed eating. The BI said that the
food wasn't stolen. The Center for
Disease Control couldn't find any
Bubonic Plague, Beri Beri ow Whooping
Cough Virus. They aid that just becau
the food came through Berrien County
that didn't mean that it was contarni
nated.
A survey team from out to the college
passed out a questionaire a ing people
would they eat the fo d: did they care
where it came from; were they mad at
Berrien County; could they cook; did
they wear white shoes; how high is up;
where was Moses when the lights went
out; and a lot of other thing but we
won't bother to go into all. of that. The
main two things that our survey showed
wa 1) the people were glad to get the
fo d and (2) they ot hostile when they
had to give it bac . The next question
aire will ask some of the follow in
questions: Would that food have had to
be returned if it h dn't been distributed
in the Covert are? Is keepin book
blanced more important than feedin
people? If the food is available and if
the people are hungry and Van Cap is
for real why don't they get the fo d
and distribute it in the county? H w is
Berrien County able to get food for its
people that Van Buren can't get? Is
protectin turf more important than
filling stomachs? After all the e years of
hearing complaints about Berrien County
taking things nd withholding things and
denying things to Van Buren County it
would eem that we would accept an th t
they would give at least we would be
starting to get even.
We realize that bureaucrats and
a ency people are alway on the defensive
because they have rule to folIo and
they don't want to 10 their grant
money. We think that it would have
been a sm rt public relations move on
their part to look. the other way in this
case because everybody would have
come out smelling li e a rose. B A
h d done me pay back, UAH had done
a good deed the state was happy that
the food was gone and nobody could
go to jail becaus the people would
eat the evidence.

A delicious vegetable-lentil ste served over rice
ma es a completely balanced protein dish. And the
coo ing time is next to nothing because the lentils
come already cooked in a thick, ready-to-serve soup.
Add a couple of spices and a few vegetables and
that's all there is to it. Celery, carrots, zucchini, to
rna oes, potatoes, green beans-whatever you have on
hand is fine.
