intriauin tale of Mont
gomery's Children. With
an anful blendin& of fan
tasy and reality, the r
becomes connected with the
lives of several families re
siding in Montgomery. It's
compelling dramatic plot is
imqinatively narrated and
sufficiently suspenseful; it
contains dements of love,
"friendship, vengeance,
murder, etc.
All of these elements and
the authors astute insights
into the paradoxes of Black
experiences combine to
make Perry's second novel
a po erful and haunting
reading experience.
It's one weakness is an
anticlimatic ending. Ther
are, in fact, several "mini"
climaxes interspersed in the
story. But the weaving of
lives and details evident in
Montgomery's Children be
comes unraveled toward
the end and the reader may
be forced to make his own
conclusions. Still,' it is a
suitable choice for an eve
ning of fireside reading.
