t Reye' Syndrome?
Reye's syndrome i a relatively ne ly
recognized disorder first de ribed by
Dr. R.D.K. Reye i 1963. It is a com
bination of ign and symptoms du to
changes usually occuring in the liver and
brain.
Ho Common Reye' ?
The incidence of Reye's increa s
during flu and chicken pox epidemics
and gets ide publicity. At this time
duri the Reye's season I t year, 13
ca s ere reported in Michigan. T 0
years ago 10 c were reported. To
date this Reye's ason only 5 ca shave
b en identified michigan. The inci
dence of death from Reye's however,
i much Ie than that due to accident
and poisoning in the home.
Can I Recognize It?
V' D' rder - Almost all c s of
Reye s syndrome follow a virus infect
ion such as flu or chi ken pox.
Reco ry - There is usually a short
peri d hen the child em much
better but not completely recovered.
Vomitin - Violent relentle vomit
in is almo t always the first . n of
Reye's syndrome. The pubil are fre
quently dilated at thi time and the
child m y become very listie .
BdlaVlolOr Ot - The child be-
come irritable and negative with in
creasing confusion disorientation and
ho ility. They are frequently com
bative with kickin and biting.

It is a di a of unknown cause, but
certainly does not em to be contagious.
n Does Ca Reye' ?
The ecifi cau of Reye' is un-
known but it ems that a number of
factor may interact to result in Reye' .
The factors include the viral infection
that nearly always preceds the disorder
and probably veral genetic and environ
mental factor that a yet are not under
ood.
What About Aspirin?
Children who receive aspirm or
sal" ylate-containing medication for in
fluenia or chick n pox em to be at
increa d ri for getting Reye's syn
