Some people believe in lucky charms. They think charms stop bad luck. This is an old idea. Long ago people thought evil spirits were around. The ay to get rid of evil spirits was to use a charm. Ann and Adam believed in charms. They thought night as unlucky. Ann always wanted to eat before dark. It meant that Adam had to stop work ear­ ly. In winter he had to stop work very early. One day he found a bright stone. He sa it in the light of the sun. It was very bright. It looked like a little sun. Adam thought, "It looks like the sun. Ann ill like this." . Adam too the stone and put it away. He took it home that night. "I have a surprise for you." "What," said Ann. "It is a surprise for you." He held out his hand. In it was the shiny stone. Ann said it was a lucky charm. She remembered the markings on the stone. "Somebody lost that charm. I hope good luck will come to us." Ann had seen' that sign before. It looked like the kind people had in a story she read It would fight off evil. People would know it was a lucky charm. Adam's brother saw the stone. He said that it was pretty. It might be worth money . "You might get some money for it," said Nathaniel. "The luck will be in the money, not in the magic power." Nathaniel took the stone to a je elry store. The jeweler said it was worth one hundred dollars. Ann was happy too. athaniel as right. Nathaniel said, "Maybe no you will not believe in magic. This as a message for you," He continued, "Many people believe in superstitions. They believe it's bad to walk under a ladder. They go around knocking on Wood.
