ARRIET Tubman was born a
slave. Her name was Arminta Green.
Harriet married .Jonn Tubman and
had children. She always wanted to
be free. One day she just up and ran
away. She ran to the North. Different
people helped her hide from the slave
owners who came to get her. Harriet
kne it as against the law to run
away from slavery. She didn't care.
She loved FREEDOM.
After Harriet was free for a while she
anted others to be free. She wanted
her family to be free. Harriet Tubman
ent back to get them. She said, "I'm
goin' to da North, if you want to go
wid me, I will lea e tonight." They
went with her.
Harriet Tubman made many trips
from the North to free slaves. She ran
the "Underground Railroad." It was a
way to get slaves to freedom and the
houses where they stopped were
called "stations." In the Civil War
Harriet Tubman helped the black men
ho fought in the army. She always
believed in paying her way. She
would help raise money for the
soldiers by baking cakes and pies.
She did many things to get money to
help the soldiers.
FTER the war Harriet Tubman
started a home for old people. She liv­
ed there until she died in 1913. She
as called the "Moses of her
people." She made famous the
spiritual, "Let My People Go." God
gave her the gift of helping slaves
reach FREEDOM .

ship. Many blacks died on the ship.
He would not stop wanting to be free.
As he lay in the dark bottom of the

At last the ship got to Cuba. There
Cinque was sold. He was sold to ork
on a plantation. He talked to others
about freedom. He said, "Freedom or
Death." Other slaves asked Cinque,
"How can we be free?" Cinque
answered, "Take our freedom when
