Ralph Johnson Bunche was an
outstanding Afro-American. He won a
peace prize for helping countries stay
out of are Dr. Bunche came from Los
Angeles. He wOft(ed hard to go to col­
lege. Fe people thought he would ever
be great. He knew he had a way to be
great-love people, work hard and
make every day :-\ step upward.
Dr. Ralph Bunche learned sorro early.
His mother and father died when he
as a boy. "_'is grandmother and several
aunts raised him.
Dr. Bundle attended many universities.
Even h he had to ark hard to go
to col he succeeded. He as a
model for all young blacks. All over the

The Americans did not want to make
Cuba mad. They decided to send Ctn­
que back to Africa. They did not want
to have him stay here. That could go
against a contract with Cuba. The

Fred as slow hen he first started.

speed. It as hard with people yelling
their orders, putting supplies a ay,
and needing to watch the grill so that
the food ould not burn. After a
while, Fred found it easy. He had a
system. That was the answer: Make a
system!
Mildred was a lot of help when she
was there. She could take orders and
make change. Then Fred couldwork
the grill and make extra special ham­
burgers for the customers. Mildred
did not come in every day and on
those days Fred had to make change.
He was glad he took that math class
at night school. Fred is happy with
his job and does not get angry when
people call him "Burger-Jerker."
The ship was going to another part of
Cuba. The men fought the slave
o ners. They won. Cinque then satl-
. oed the Ship. He thought he was going
to Africa. He carne to the United
States. The men were hungry and
some died. Many died of hunger.
Cinque landed the Ship. The men
found food. They had gold. The gold
as from the Ship. The Americans lik·
ed the gold. They sold them food.The
American Navy came to arrest them.
They arrested Cinque and his men.
"Is this a free country? Why are you
putting me in jail? I just want to be
free." The answer as, "It is the law."
The man from Cuba' came to cid;m
his ship. He wanted Cinque and the
men also. Cinque could not talk
English well. He did talk for his
freedom. A lawyer heard about Oln­
que. He went to talk for him and the
others. He told his family, "I must go
and help these men." When he got
.there Cinque was happy. Cinque
taught him ho to count in
African-Eta, Fele, Siawa. The
lawyer was able to make friends with
the other Africans because he could
count in African. "Eta, Fele, Siawa."
It was soon that the lawyer could talk
to Cinque in his language. Cinque
learned English, too.
