State Representative Lad
Stacey' (R-Berrien Springs) said
today h is strongly opposed to
a Democrat-sponsored plan that
ould raise the state's personal
incomtt tax from 4.6 to 5.5
percerlt by April 1 , move
hich could increase ichigarr
residents' total taxes in future
years t5 over $220 million.
The plan, offered in the
form of a bill introduced by
House- Taxation Committee
Chairman George Montgomery
(D-Detroit), is in response to a
tax limitation ballot referendum,
kno n as the H adlee Amend
ment, approved by voters in
ovember. Under guidelines
set up an the Headlee Amend-
ment, r n taken in by th
state during the 1978-79 fiscal
year would be divided by
Michigan's 1977 total personal
income. Total taxes would
then be limited to that
percentage of total personal
income.
