Hebrew Free Loan Detroit

6735 TELEGRAPH ROAD, SUITE 300 • BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MICHIGAN 48301

@hebrewfreeloandetroit

Community donations help Hebrew Free Loan give interest-free loans
to local Jews for a variety of personal, health, educational and small
business needs.

Herschel Ungar approached HFL to help pay for the cost

of dental school. “One of the things that moved me to connect

with Hebrew Free Loan was that anyone going to a Michigan-

based school could apply, and it was interest-free,” Herschel

said. “And then HFL made it seem like they were making an

investment in me as a person, and in my future.”

Herschel had graduated from dental school and was already

working when he matched into a prestigious three-year

prosthodontics specialty program at the University of Michigan.

“Out of about 130 admissions in the country, or 5 in the state,

I got one of them – such an amazing opportunity,” Herschel

said. “There’s nothing similar in our region, so I would have had

to leave Michigan with my wife and children in order to get

this kind of experience. I looked to HFL again, since in order

to say yes I also had to stop working. Out of the goodness of

their hearts, HFL not only invested in me again, they allowed

me to pause the repayment of one loan and start a new loan.

They couldn’t have been more supportive.”

Herschel is now in the second year of the program. His goal

when he completes his specialty training is to move into a

multi-disciplinary practice where all of a patient’s needs are

all able to be managed within the same team.

“When I’m done I would also enjoy taking what I’ve learned

and teaching in some capacity, mentoring and passing on my

knowledge to the next generation of dental professionals.”
