FACING PAGE, L TO R: Jewish students hold an #EndJewHatred sign at a student

to bring attention to Hamas’
hostages (“Pro-Israel Rally,” April
18, 2024). Oakland University
invited Michal Oshman, author
of What Would You Do if You
Weren’t Afraid? to a campus panel
in March (March 21, 2024, JN).
U-M students held a solidarity
rally for Israel on the Diag
(“Together, We Stand,” Oct. 10,
2024). Students from MSU Jewish
Studies and Muslim Studies
continue to have tough but civil
discussions (“Conversations of
Antisemitism and Islamophobia,”
Aug. 15, 2024). Students for
Israel at Wayne State manned
an information table at the
campus’ FestiFall celebration
(“Microaggressions and
Macroaggressions,” Nov. 21,
2024). And U-M’s Central Student

Government election resulted in a
coalition dedicated to “restoring a
campus environment of unity and
peace” despite a lecture on Black-
Jewish relations being disrupted
by anti-Israel agitators (“U-M’s
Hostile Climate May Be Coming
to an End,” Dec. 5, 2024).
Throughout the year, campus
Hillels, Chabad Centers and
Jewish student groups continued
to stand up to the haters and
celebrate their Judaism despite
the turmoil of the campus
environment since Oct. 7, 2023.
That refusal to bow down or run
scared has earned the Michigan
Jewish college student the JN’s
“Newsmaker of the Year.”
