listening to Ella Fitzgerald. Arbel
studied jazz at the Rimon School
of Music near Tel Aviv, then moved
on to the Newpark Music School
Center in Dublin, Ireland, and
attended the 24th International
Association of Schools of Jazz con-
ference in South Africa as its repre-
sentative. She earned her bachelor
of arts degree in Jazz Performance
at Newpark, with high honors.
“I always defaulted into singing
and pushed to that,” Arbel says,
“and luckily I had that support
from my family.”
GLOBAL CONNECTIONS
After graduating, she began to
travel the world as a singer and
dancer, performing throughout
Israel as well as in Turkey, Bulgaria
and the U.S. Arbel moved to New
York during 2014 and became part
of the jazz scene there, collaborat-
ing with an international array of
artists such as Guy Mintus, Samir
Langus, Tulio Araujo and the
Japanese band Ichimujin. “With
every music genre that I’ve encoun-
tered, it was just a deeper explora-
tion, for all of my life,” Abel says.
Those global connections also
instilled in Arbel a spirit of com-
passion and inclusiveness that’s
reflected in the songs on “Oneness”
— and, of course, the album’s title.
“It’s about just how we, as human
beings, can be a bit better,” she
explains. “A lot of the songs talk
about the meaning of what it is to
be human and how we can dive
deeper in ourselves to be better to
ourselves, and hopefully that will
ripple around us and create not just
a better self but better surround-
ings and, hopefully, a better world.
“I wrote it during COVID,
which was a few years ago. And
it’s very interesting to see how the
topics that came out have been
very, very relevant to the present
time. It seems like the world is
just going bananas ... but, you
know, we are human beings on this
planet, and there’s always room
for improvement within ourselves
regardless of what is happening
around you.”
With “Oneness” out, Arbel —
who also teaches music — says “the
seed has been planted” for her next
project, something she describes
as “more conceptual” and diving
further into the Indian styles that
infuse the new albums. And she’s
not averse to looking even further
ahead.
“I would love to maybe have a
collaborative album with different
artists,” she says. “And I would
love to bring my music and play it
with a big band or a large orchestra
and hear the music in that aspect.
That would be such a dream come
true, so we’ll see. Hopefully it can
happen.”
