F
rankel Jewish Academy’s
Performing Arts Department
will present The Odd Couple,
Female Version, the late, great
Neil Simon’s revision of his hugely
successful play The Odd Couple,
Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. and
Thursday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. at the
Berman Center for the Performing
Arts in West Bloomfield.
Now the lead characters are
Olive Madison and Florence Unger.
Olive and her group of girlfriends
are enjoying their weekly Trivial
Pursuit Night in Olive’s messy and
ill-equipped apartment. During the
game, Florence arrives, having just
been dumped by her husband. Fearful
that the neurotic Florence might try
to harm herself, Olive invites her to
move in as her roommate. However,
Olive and Florence have very differ-
ent personalities.
Where Olive is messy, unkempt
and unconcerned about the clean-
liness of her apartment, Florence is
overly clean, tidy and obsessed with
hygiene. Olive’s easy-going outlook
on life soon clashes with Florence’s
high-strung neurotic tendencies,
testing their friendship to the limit.
When Olive organizes a double date
with the Costazuela brothers, their
differences come to a head and sparks
fly.
Neil “Doc” Simon earned the
highest achievements in a 40-year
comedy writing career. Beginning
with an iconic television series in the
medium’s infancy and continuing to
Broadway and the movies, Simon was
bestowed with three Tony Awards,
two Emmys, a Screen Writers Guild
Award and a Pulitzer Prize. He left a
legacy of over 28 irrepressible plays,
most notably the original version
of The Odd Couple. Past FJA pro-
ductions of Simon’s works include
Brighton Beach Memoirs, Laughter
on the 23rd Floor, 45 Seconds from
Broadway and Broadway Bound.
The show is under the guid-
ance of Mitch Master, director of
the Performing and Visual Arts
Department, who has been with FJA
since the school was founded in 2000.
The cast includes eight very talented
FJA students who have been rehears-
ing this show for months: Rena
Kantor (Olive Madison); Talia Glass
(Florence Unger); Shira Yamstein
(Mickey); Jacob Potocsky (Vera);
Jacob Miller (Renee); Jillian Schiffer
(Sylvie); Hillell Chudnow (Manolo
Costazuela); Nathan Bak (Jesus
Costazuela) and Aiden Burnstein
(Student Director).
General admission tickets are $15
each. The Berman will apply a $3 ser-
vice fee per ticket. Visit The Berman’s
Virtual Box Office: theberman.org or
call/text (248) 406-6677.

is presented by arrangement with

cordtheatricals.com. In FJA’s produc-
tion, certain props, adult language
and adult content are left unaltered as
