FLORENCE SCHREIER, 94, of
West Palm Beach, Fla., died Nov.
14, 2024.
She was born Feb. 7, 1930, in
Chicago, Illinois, to Ben and Anna
Meyerhoff Aft, humble immigrants
from Poland and Russia. Yiddish
was the home language for her
and her older brothers, Harry and
Ralph.
She often recalled learning to
count while making rolls of pennies
at her parents’ corner newsstand.
She attended Habonim’s Labor
Zionist Youth Camp Hachshara
in California, where she learned
agricultural skills while considering
emigrating to Israel and life on a
kibbutz. This is where Florence
met the love of her life, Bernard
(Bernie) Schreier of Detroit whom
she married on March 25, 1951.
Yiddishkeit brought her great
joy, and throughout her life she
remained active in Habonim and
Habonim’s Midwest Camp Tavor,
where she and Bernie sent their
children.
She was active in Detroit’s Bagley
Elementary School PTA, worked
as an allergy shot med-tech and
volunteered for more than 30 years
at the Detroit Institute of Art as a
school docent and in the Museum
Store. She was often found by the
Diego Rivera Murals, pointing out
details to visitors.
Her greatest joy came from
her six children and the families
they each created. She enriched
them with her passion for visual,
musical and dramatic arts. She and
Bernie spent many years traveling
to visit them in New York, New
Hampshire, California and Florida.
Florence is survived by her
husband of 73 years, Bernard
Schreier; children, Josh and Eve,
Esther and David, Daniel and
Gail, Noah and Bob, Benjamin
and Lisa, Deborah and Gordon;
grandchildren, Max and Anita,
Simon and Amy, Sarah and Jessica,
Michael and Cara, Gemma, Milo,
Jeremy, Arielle and Geoffrey,
Eliana and Noah, and Hazel; great-
grandchildren, Casey, Ezra, Isaac,
and Alexandria.
