members to discuss pressing issues,
foster solidarity and strengthen ties.
Jewish Federation of Detroit Board
President Gary Torgow was the chair
of the General Assembly this year (see
related story on page 4).
About 50 Jewish communal leaders
made up Detroit’s delegation at the
Stand Together event.
Dr. Conrad Giles, honorary presi-
dent of World ORT and longtime local
community leader and philanthropist,
was at the event. Giles said that at this
particular time in Israel’s history and in
the history of the Jewish people, “being
together” is incredibly impactful.
“I’ve been coming to the General
Assembly since 1982, and I never fail
to leave without being enthused, ener-
gized and so confident that as a people,
we will continue to do what we’ve
always done through the millennia,

Giles said. “It’s especially great being
here with so many individuals from
Detroit who share this vision.

“Perhaps the most beautiful thing I
could say is there are so many people I
have never seen before, so I know the
next generation is going to carry on
the tradition of our great Jewish com-
munity.

Dennis Bernard, chair of JFNA
’s
Security and Antisemitism Committee
and past president of the United Jewish
Foundation of Detroit, said Stand
Together is a wonderful way to not
only bring Jewish Detroit together, but
also for all the other Jewish commu-
nities in North America to unite and
stand together in strength, while doing
it in a peaceful way.
“I really hope the Israelis who are
here understand we, as American Jews.
are with them, and we will not leave
them or desert them,
” Bernard said
of the event. “We feel their pain, their
pride, their strength and their unity. I
hope everybody who has been person-
ally affected by Oct. 7 feels that we’re
with them.
