The reposado, meanwhile, is
aged for four months and picks up
barrel notes of vanilla and toffee
butterscotch. “It has this sweet
caramel flavor to it,” Sobol says.
On the label of Tekiah Spirits
tequila is a Hamsa, which Sobol
says was intentional to make it
stand out at a distance. Of course, it
represents the Jewish spirit as well.
“You’ll see all of the different
elements in there,” he says, “from
the agave to the tree of life, to the
shofars and the Hebrew text. I want
people to identify what it is without
even reading the name.”
While Sobol himself isn’t a big
drinker, he says he gravitates toward
tequila because of its smooth finish
and cleaner profile. “It’s a better-
for-you spirit,” he explains. “The
agave we’re making it from is a
cleaner source. It’s low-glycemic,
so I’ve always liked it from that

standpoint.”
In order to make Tekiah kosher,
though, Sobol researched exactly
what goes into making a spirit
additive-free. “What’s the difference,
what are the nuances, what are the
palettes and the tasting notes?” he
muses. “I had to find the standard
of a good, authentic kosher tequila.”
He also traveled to Mexico to
meet with producers and distilleries
to find his perfect partner.
For now, Sobol hopes Tekiah will
take hold in Michigan and ingrain
itself in the local Jewish community.
Eventually, he plans to potentially
scale nationwide.
“Every wedding or Jewish
event will be able to feature a true
Michigan kosher Jewish tequila,” he
says. “It’s amazing to think about
the possibilities.”
