highlight the growing normalization
of microaggressions and macroag-
gressions. In 2022, the FBI reported
that 63% of all religious hate crimes in
Michigan targeted Jewish people (FBI
Crime Data Explorer), and that num-
ber is likely rising.
While microaggressions might seem
less severe than overt acts of aggres-
sion, they can be more insidious, mak-
ing them harder to identify and report.
Being excluded from class discussions,
followed on campus or stared at in a
hostile way can create a pervasive sense
of fear. When any minority group
feels targeted, it negatively impacts the
campus experience for everyone. This
includes Jewish students. When we feel
safe, we are more likely to engage in
campus life, join clubs and express our
Jewish identity. This, in turn, fosters
diversity and inclusivity on campus.
Regardless of their political views,

Jewish students across America feel the
repercussions when Israel is in conflict.
This is especially true now, with ten-
sions on campus higher than ever.
We want to express our gratitude to
everyone who stopped by the SFI table
and showed their support — whether
through whispers, smiles or conver-
sations. We also appreciate the WSU
police for checking in on us and ensur-
ing our safety throughout the event.
Thank you to everyone who took the
time to help make a minority group
feel more comfortable and secure on
campus.
We look forward to continuing to
use this platform to share diverse per-
spectives on Israel and proudly show-
case our identity and culture. @

In this challenging moment,
we must tell our own story
and not let others tell it for
us. EMU’s Center for Jewish Studies
has worked with the university to
promote a civil atmosphere on campus.
Our events, which foster appreciation
for the richness of Jewish culture and
history, continue to be popular and
well-attended. Stand with us and
support us in our efforts to educate
and engage our students and
members of the greater
Southeast Michigan community.
