ome experiences are jaw dropping. If dumb-
founded, you may have been told that a
closed mouth does not catch flies. In fact,
just being told something should awaken you to the
number of mouth (or parts thereof) references that
we use daily.
It is never a clever idea to mouth off
to someone or to be foul-mouthed.
Those actions create bad impressions.
Giving someone lip is in the same cate-
gory. If told, “You said a mouthful,” you
may be proud of your contribution.
Those who are too talkative are
described as blabbermouths. When sad,
they are down in the mouth. If accustomed to riches,
they were born with silver spoons in their mouths.
Have faith in what you believe; do not just pay
lip service to a belief. To emphasize a point, how-
ever, you may say, “Read my lips.” If asked to keep
a secret, advise that, “My lips are sealed.” Remain
reserved and keep a stiff upper lip.
If you are being ironic and not to be taken seri-
ously, you are speaking tongue-in-cheek. But if you
exhibit impertinence, you may hear your actions
described as “such cheek!” Dancing cheek-to-cheek
is quite romantic but almost non-existent today. If for-
giveness is due, it is time to turn the other cheek.
Are you shy in public? You may be asked if the cat
got your tongue. A reply that does not come imme-
diately to mind is on the tip of your tongue. Many
evangelistic experiences cause folks to speak in
tongues.
If you attempt an overwhelming task, you may be
said to have bitten off more than you could chew.
But before you reply in the negative, bite your
tongue. Like fun with words? Try a tongue twister.
Don’t beat around the bush if you have something
to say; spit it out. Are you so angry that you could
spit nails? Any “enemy” should be warned not to
come within spitting distance. If unaware of reper-
cussions, you may be said to be spitting in the wind.
(This is the place I insert a “joke.”) A friend said he
could not eat tongue because it came from a cow’s
mouth. I served him an egg.
