“I like to dress dancers

individually. I like to respond to
their bodies and make clothes
that are beautiful on their bodies.
That’s hard because sometimes
you have substitutes. Sometimes
it’s like a puzzle, but I love
puzzles.
“You work on a project like this
for years. The request came in
about 2018. You’re considering and
thinking and going back and forth
and talking. There’s a week when
you are just doing this. Then, six
weeks later, you’re doing a tech
rehearsal. You’re doing refitting.”
During the time that the
costumes were being made,
Mizrahi also did other musical
presentations, TV shows and small
parts in big movies.
“I went to the opening of The
Look of Love,” he said. “Before that,
I went to all the dress rehearsals
in Los Angeles. It was all very

seamless, and I made no changes
to the costuming after the show
started. The lighting changed a bit
after the lighting designer saw the
costumes on stage for the first time.
“Lighting is much easier to alter
than a bunch of costumes.”
Mizrahi, who modified his Jewish
observances after an Orthodox
upbringing, is open about what
designing means to his life.
“Designing brings the
opportunity to imagine who
the characters are,” he said. “It’s
fascinating to bring some kind
of psychological reality one step
further to getting the audience to
admire or understand.”
