feels like a minority. Freedom of
speech and expression guaranteed
for all but the Jews. Social justice
for all but the Jews. Condemning
rape and war crimes for everyone
but the Jews. You matter, they say,
unless you are a Jew.
So here is my “call to action.”
For anyone who made it this far
down, to anyone who can still see
my humanity, to anyone who can
conceptualize that more than one
thing can be true at once, stop and
listen. Educate yourselves. Realize
that there is not a singular nar-
rative but rather a complex and
deep history for everything that we
learn.
Do something other than cite

TikTok as fact. Let us define what
is antisemitic, what is painful, what
is threatening. Stop being domes-
tic terrorists thinly disguised as
concerned social justice warriors,
because the terrorists abroad are
thanking you for your efforts.
I am on the right side of history,
and I will always love being a Jew
more than anyone will hate me for
it. Can the waves calm for long
enough to let us tread water, too?
We can’t tread water forever, but
we certainly will not allow our-
selves to drown.

Julia Diskin is an MSW graduate student at

the University of Michigan School of Social

Work.

• Nearly half (46%) of American Jews changed their behavior out
of fear of antisemitism in 2023 (AJC).
• According to the FBI, in 2023, of the 3,121 victims of anti-
religious (even though Judaism is not simply a religion) hate
crimes that were reported, 66.3% were victims of crimes
motivated by offenders’ anti-Jewish bias and 9.1% were victims of
anti-Islamic (Muslim) bias. Jewish people make up approximately
2.4% (7.5 million) of the U.S. population while Muslims make up
approximately 1.34% (4.45 million) of the U.S. population.
