of Equality, which holds as a self-
evident truth that all men and
women are created equal and are
entitled to the full blessings of
liberty and equal protection of the
law regardless of religion, race,
ethnic group and gender.”
Rabbi Burnham added,
“Anytime we discuss equality, the
Jewish experience and the United
States of America, we must
begin by expressing our deep
gratitude to the U.S. for being a
Medina Shel Chessed, a Nation of
Kindness, a term used by many of
the leading Torah scholars of the
last century.

“For centuries,” he added. “Jews
have been allowed to worship
freely and live without fear, and
that is not something anyone
with any familiarity with Jewish
history would take for granted.
So, we are thankful to the U.S.,
not just in words, but in action,
by being vibrant contributing
members of our society.”
Rabbi Burnham also quoted from
a 1948 speech by Winston Churchill:
“Those that fail to learn from
history are doomed to repeat it.”
Burnham said,“History is,
unfortunately, filled with countries
where the majority of the Jews were
too confident that they would be
treated correctly, until they weren’t,
and it was too late.
“So, at this time, Jews have a
dual mandate, to unceasingly
fight for the equality and
rights guaranteed to us by the
Constitution, but also to put up
antenna … and to consider what
are the red lines that, if crossed,
might mean that we are not fully
welcome here.”
