nspired by his then 10-year-old daughter,
Oakland County Circuit Court Judge
Michael Warren identified the days of
Sept. 11-17 as Patriot Week, a period now
recognized by the U.S. Senate. In its 15th
year, the goal of Patriot Week continues to
celebrate, teach and nurture pride in the
history of the United States of America.
“Patriot Week renews America’s spirit
by deepening the appreciation of the first
principles, founding fathers and other
patriots, vital documents and speeches, and
flags that make America the greatest nation in
world history,” Judge Warren said.
The Jewish Bar Association of Michigan
(JBAM) welcomed guests to a panel
held at Platform 18 in Royal Oak to
learn about Patriot Week and talk about
the unprecedented challenges to being
Jewish today in a climate of rampant and
omnipresent antisemitism.
“This event was significant because the
pursuit of justice and equality is deeply rooted
in Jewish values, particularly those central
to JBAM’s mission. We openly discussed the
rights and dignity of Jewish Americans —
past, present and future,” said JBAM President
Jordan Zuppke.
“The Jewish community’s historic fight
against persecution and discrimination
remains a vital topic,” Zuppke added, “and
we thank Judge Warren of Patriot Week,
Rabbi Leiby Burnham of Partners Detroit and
Professor Howard Lupovitch of Wayne State
University for an engaging discussion.”
Professor Lupovitch remarked, “The
program resonated with the ways that, while
the rootedness of Jews in America remains
firm, the recent resurgence of antisemitism
among left- and right-wing extremists during
the last decade has raised a measure of
uncertainty among American Jews for the first
time in more than half a century.”
Judge Warren said, “We especially
appreciated the Jewish Bar Association of
Michigan’s event focused on the First Principle
Distinguished panel discuss the principles that have
made America “the greatest nation in world history.”
