Scott Hutten wrote an impas-
sioned nomination for Joe
Lipman to be the Jeff Fox Sports-
manship Award winner in the
Koufax Division of the Inter-Con-
gregational Men’s Club Summer
Softball League this season.
The nomination was persua-
sive. Lipman, the coach of the
Temple Shir Shalom No. 3 team,
won the award, which is select-
ed by weekly league’s directors.
Hutten is Shir Shalom No. 3’s
assistant coach. He also jokingly
calls himself the team’s softball
recruitment and talent coordi-
nator.
Hutten presented the award to
Lipman at the league’s awards
ceremony, held during the play-
offs.
Here are snippets from
Hutten’s nomination:
“When we started our team
more than five years ago, Joe
had a vision of a team where
family and friends would be front
and center and would make a
difference in the league. It would
be an inclusive team and a des-
tination team. Thanks to Joe,
we’ve achieved this and now it’s
time to recognize his efforts.”
Hutten wrote that the Shir
Shalom No. 3 team is admired,

there are players lining up to
join the team, the team helps
other teams, and the players on
the team hang out off the field
as much as possible.
Lipman’s parents are the
team’s base coaches and do the
team stats, Hutten wrote, and
Lipman helps the league when
needed.
On a recent Sunday, Hutten
wrote, Lipman asked one of
the Shir Shalom No. 3 players
to play for another team so it
wouldn’t have to forfeit.
“Both teams thanked our play-
er so there wouldn’t be a forfeit,”
Hutten wrote. “Joe was on the
phone that evening thanking our
player and he made another call
to a player on our team thanking
him for playing a position he
wasn’t comfortable with.”
If a Shir Shalom No. 3 player
is having a tough time, Hutten
said, “Joey is supportive and will
apply tough love if needed.”
The Jeff Fox Award has been
presented by the league since
2012. It honors a beloved Shir
Shalom player who died in 2011.
The 2024 Greenberg Division
recipient of the Jeff Fox Award
was Adam Weiner of Temple
Israel No. 1.

The Homeruntaschens are the champions of the Inter-Congrega-
tional Men’s Club Summer Softball League’s fall season.
They beat the Kosher Ribs 10-5 in the playoff title game Oct. 6.
Earlier in the playoffs Oct. 6, they edged the Donkey Kong Jews
12-11 and beat the Jeters 11-3. In other playoff games that day, the
Kosher Ribs beat Marble Rye 16-1 and the Mensches 4-2.
Teams in the fall season are made up of players from different
synagogues, unlike the summer season.
