The juxtaposition of the farm

tour and food waste discussion was
fitting, as it highlighted how much
work goes into producing food and
underscored the magnitude of the
human and material inputs that are
squandered.
Following the meal, Paul weighed
the amount of food that was left
on plates, finding that it totaled 4
pounds. While these remains could
not be composted on the farm due to
the inclusion of the chicken and fish,
a participant offered to bring them to
Detroit’s Midtown Composting.

ONE TABLE
The event was organized by Brittany
Feldman, Detroit-based national
field manager of OneTable, a North
American nonprofit that empowers
young adults in their 20s and 30s to
find, share and enjoy Shabbat din-
ners. Young adults can sign up as
hosts on the OneTable platform and
post Shabbat dinners, and they can
receive “Nourishment” in the form

of gift cards for takeout, groceries or
supplemental items to enhance their
dinners. Those interested in joining
someone else’s dinner can also use the
platform to find Shabbat dinners to
attend.
This event was a OneTable
Conversation, part of a series of
events organized by OneTable that
provide current hosts as well as other
community members a chance to
meet and engage in meaningful con-
versations during Shabbat dinner. A
goal of the event was for everyone to
leave with the confidence and com-
fort to host welcoming and inclusive
Shabbat dinners involving coura-
geous conversations.
By the end of the evening, new
connections were made, everyone
was stuffed and all were sent home
with OneTable swag, hosting materi-
als and delicious leftovers.

OneTable plans to host more OneTable

Conversation events over the coming year.
