W

hen a community leader like
Nancy Bechek Bluth, a past presi-
dent of Hadassah Greater Detroit
and a 25-year member, is given an award,
she expects to be the subject of tributes
and toasts. A musical serenade, however,
might come as a surprise.
Yet that’s exactly what happened on
Sept. 10 at Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills, when 175 Hadassah
members and friends, from Pittsburgh
to Chicago, gathered for the 2024 Judi
Schram Autumn Celebration to honor

Nancy.
The Shul Sisters, the cantorial trio who
provided the evening’s entertainment, had
reached out to Nancy’s husband, Larry,
to ask if the couple had a favorite song.
They did, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the
house when the group performed Johnny
Mathis’ “Small Town.
”
Another piece, “We Have the Power, the
Voice to Change the World,
” was especial-
ly relevant to the audience of Hadassah
women (and their male allies), who live by
the Hadassah slogan, “Women Who Do.
