Congregation Shir Tikvah celebrates its Koufax Division championship in the
Inter-Congregational Men’s Club Summer Softball League.

definitely the underdog,” Bassin
said about Adat Shalom No. 1’s
effort in its marathon game vs.
Beth Ahm.
“Adat Shalom No. 1 lost and
I’m sure they were disappointed,
but there was no reason to hang
their heads,” Bassin said.
Shir Tivkah found itself down
13-5 to Beth Ahm midway
through the playoff championship
game but tied it 13-13 and sent
the game to extra innings.
Beth Ahm failed to score in the
top of the eighth, and Shir Tikvah
quickly ended the game in the
bottom of the inning.
Singles by Bassin and Kyle
Edwards put runners on first
and second with nobody out,
and winning pitcher Mark Small
scored Bassin with a walk-off RBI
single.
Small, Shir Tikvah’s backup
pitcher, filled in on the mound
for regular Shir Tikvah pitcher
Ken Williams, who was not at the
championship game, “and pitched
a great game,” Bassin said.
Just as important to Shir
Tikvah’s victory, Bassin said, was
a two-out single by Justin Remner

in the bottom of the seventh
inning that eventually turned
over Shir Tivah’s lineup for the
bottom of the eighth.
Remner’s single was
emblematic of the main reason
for Shir Tikvah’s playoff sweep.
“Everyone contributed,” Bassin
said. “Plus, our defense was solid
as usual.”
Howard Fershtman was Shir
Tikvah’s co-manager along with
Bassin.
Here’s the rest of the Shir
Tikvah roster: Scott Litt, Brook
Morris, David Eisenstein, Jordan
Small, Kyle Edwards, Herschel
Poger, Scott Kleiman, Mike
Reamer, Richard Elias and Joel
Fershtman.
Howard Fershtman’s son
Joel was in town visiting from
California and played in the
playoff championship game.
“I know it was a special
moment for Howard to share
the championship with his son,”
Bassin said.
