this month.
In 2017, Aboud also started
selling school uniforms for students
attending Beth Jacob.
“We used to have a company
that came here from New York that
provided the school uniforms,”
explained Aboud of the antiquated
system. “They were here for two
days, and every girl had to come
and try on a uniform during that

time. It was almost impossible to
get a new uniform during the year.
And what happened if a kid went
up in size? I thought we should
definitely have our own uniform
store here in Detroit — and why
not at Fit For a Kid?”
In 2022, Potpourri by Chaya
Bakst, which sells an array of gift-
wrapped home goods, became the
fourth store to sell out of Step &

Style.
The relaxed and positive vibe of
the store is warmly appreciated by
the community. One woman shared
that she really pops in for the social
life. It’s worth it to buy a yarmulke
or something cheap even if she
doesn’t actually need it, in order to
get the good feeling she leaves the
store with.
For their part, the store owners
love what they do and getting to
see the community up close during
their weekly shifts.
“We’ve had people walk in and
say, ‘Here’s $100, please apply
it to someone’s bill who can’t
really afford it,’” Aboud said. “We
love providing a service for the
community and also getting to see
how wonderful it is here from the
inside out.”
