mos Carlen’s Shadows of
Freedom will be the opening
special event for the SOAR
Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) new
fall 2024 term. The film recounts the
untold story of the Jewish and French
resistance of 1942 in Algiers, which
helped change the
course of WWII,
yet remains largely
forgotten.
These 388
resisters — mostly
young and inexpe-
rienced — almost
haplessly ended
up supporting
the Allies in North Africa. In the
process, they paved the way for a
successful invasion of Algiers by the
United States, but also helped to save
the lives of more than 500,000 Jews
in North Africa targeted by Hitler’s
Final Solution. This action was all
part of “Operation Torch,
” the joint
American/UK mission that was to
be the Allies first successful strike
against the Nazis. This largely forgot-
ten military operation remains to this
day as the longest invasion in the his-
tory of conflict. It is a piece of WWII
history that deserves our attention.
Shadows of Freedom will be shown

Friday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. in the
SOAR LLI classroom at the HAWK
Farmington Hills Community Center
(29995 W
. 12 Mile Road), third floor.
The film will be presented and
facilitated by Amos Carlen, via
Zoom, the producer/director of the
film. Attendees will
have the chance to
ask questions of
Carlen following
the film. This event
will be shown via
Zoom, to be seen
either in the class-
room or at home.
The cost is $10 for
members and $15 for non-members.
To sign up, go to soarexplore.com
and proceed to the special events
category, or contact the office at (248)
626-0296.
The SOAR LLI fall semester begins
Monday, Oct. 14, and runs through
Friday, Nov. 22. In addition to 55
stimulating classes, there are three
field trips and two additional special
events.
