Steven Weisberg Continues His Family’s Legacy of Commitment to Our Jewish Future
“I am inspired to give to Jewish charities because I feel privileged to be a part of the on-going history of the Jewish
people. I feel a connection to the generations before us who created our legacy of texts, music and love for community,
and too often sacrificed their lives and well-being to do so. My grandparents, Clara and Peter Weisberg (z”l), were very
involved in our family’s synagogue, Congregation Shaarey Zedek, and passed that sense of community to their children
and grandchildren. My parents Henrietta and Alvin Weisberg (z”l) also loved Shaarey Zedek, as well as the Detroit Jewish
community. They made major gifts to Jewish Federation, Jewish Senior Life, Hillel Day School, the Holocaust Memorial
Center, Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network, and provided substantial support for Israel. My parents were also
generous in the greater Detroit community, primarily at Beaumont Hospital. With my immediate family well taken care of,
I feel an obligation to give back much of the financial blessings I have been granted. I plan to make meaningful gifts to
Jewish charities so that our people and our heritage will continue as a light unto the nations.
I made a Centennial gift for a few reasons. Simply put, upon my demise, I don’t want the Federation to lose my annual
support. However, since Jewish education is our future, I separated my gift into two parts. The first is designated to help
keep Jewish education in Detroit more accessible for families that need a helping hand. For the other half, I decided to
create a PACE (Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment) fund to provide continuing support for Israel, our local agencies
and the other special programs sponsored by Federation. I hope the Detroit Jewish community continues its role as
a leader in America and around the world. During my lifetime, we have been led by giants in Jewish philanthropy and
continue to have so many extraordinary people committed to Jewish life here and abroad. May it always continue from
generation to generation.”
