Susie Feldman, Federation’s

director of
Philanthropic and
Corporate Relations,
says she and Liss
sometimes call
themselves sisters from
another mother.
“We met in 1987 on
the first women’s Hadracha mission
to Israel. We immediately clicked,”
Feldman said.
She describes Liss as “the
consummate leader and volunteer”
and “an incredible mentor.”
“There isn’t anyone I can think of
that is more deserving of the Butzel
Award,” she said.

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP
Liss was president of Women’s
Philanthropy from 1998 to 2000
and of the Jewish Federation of
Detroit from 2017 to 2020. She
has been on the Hillel Day School
Board and served as president of
Adat Shalom Synagogue from 1988
to 1990.
Five years ago, when she
was Federation president, Liss
started hosting a
monthly podcast,
FedRadioDetroit, with
Sam Dubin, who then
worked at the Jewish
Community Relations
Council and has since
moved to the New York
area, where he is Jewish community
affairs manager for the Jewish
Community Relations Council of
Long Island.
“Beverly’s passion for taking care
of the needs of the Jewish people
extends from her presidency of
Federation to her constant devotion
to the Metro Detroit Jewish
community,” Dubin said. “She is
the ultimate lay leader. The Metro
Detroit Jewish community is better
because of Beverly and I’m excited
to witness how she’ll continue to
serve the community.”
The Lisses have been blessed
with what Beverly describes as
three very accomplished children.
Jeremy is managing partner in a law
firm in Miami; Lindsey is a neon
artist in Chicago, and Zachary is
a pediatric urologist who lives in
Birmingham. The Lisses have nine
grandchildren, aged 9 to 21, four of
whom are in college. “These kids
are my world,” said Liss, adding
that she and her husband try to
spend as much time as possible
with them.
Community leaders have high
praise for Liss.
“I am so thrilled to see Beverly
recognized for her exceptional
contributions to our community.
Her passion, dedication and
spirit have touched countless
