whenever she felt well enough. 

Now Cohen brings a 
completed blanket or two along 
with her to doctor appointments 
to give to the nurses, who hand-
deliver her blankets downstairs 
to the NICU. She also donates 
to the Children’s Hospital of 
Michigan and gifts a blanket to 
community members who have 
a baby in the NICU. 
“I want to pay the kindness I 
received forward,” said Cohen 
who has donated around 10 
blankets to date and plans to 
continue. “I’ve got a ton of yarn, 
and I’m eagerly planning to use 
it all up and make many more 
blankets.”
These days, Cohen is rarely 
seen without her crocheting 
supplies. She takes her crochet 
bag with her wherever she goes, 
to appointments and even to the 
playground and crochets while 
she watches her son play. It takes 
the busy mom a few weeks to 
finish each baby blanket. 
Cohen doesn’t yet put 
labels on her blankets, so her 
donations in the hospital are 
anonymous, from a caring 
stranger who had once been 
in the same position. Cohen 
receives heartwarming feedback 
from the community members 
who she’s given a blanket to; they 
often rave about the blanket’s 
beautiful colors and how soft 
and cozy the blankets feel. 
“A hospital is not a 
comfortable place to be,” 
reflected Cohen. “Even years 
later, I’m still touched when I 
think that a random stranger 
created something out of love 
for my son — this soft blanket 
to literally feel comfort with. 
There’s something about a 
homemade item that says, ‘I care 
about you.’ I hope my blankets 
offer the same comfort and 
solace to these NICU babies and 
their families that we received 
from ours.”
