third inning and looking like it
was going to lose its third straight
game, Detroit scored five runs to tie
Mexico.
After falling behind again 7-5 in
the top of the fourth, the Motown
boys came back with three runs in
the bottom of the fourth to move in
front 8-7.
Mexico failed to score in the top
of the fifth, the time limit ran out,
and Detroit won the game.
“That victory gave us so much
confidence. We didn’t lose again,”
Chesney said. “I think we came
into the game a little intimidated
because we were playing a team
from a warm weather area where
the kids can play baseball year-
round.”
The enormous rally in the
bottom of the third inning featured
an RBI double by Katz; a seven-
pitch walk to Grayson Agrest; an
RBI single on a bunt by Daniel
Heicklen; and a two-strike ground
ball to the right side of the infield
by Yona Goodwin that brought in
the tying run.
Chesney said his team made
several key plays in the field during
the tournament.
For example, he said, Heicklen
made a diving catch in right field
during the pool play game vs. St.
Louis; first baseman Noah Sheridan
snagged an in-between hop on
a throw from an infielder in the
bottom of the seventh inning of the

gold medal game; and Katz made a
laser throw to third baseman Ethan
Bocknek in the top of the fifth
inning of the game vs. Mexico that
cut down a runner trying to steal
third.
“Ethan expertly let the ball travel
to the base to shorten the distance
to tag the runner and he slapped
that tag down quickly,” Chesney
said.
Rubin pitched seven innings
during the tournament. He had a
2.00 ERA and a 0.571 WHIP (walks
plus hits per innings pitched). Isiah
Herskovic went 6.1 innings on
the mound with a 3.31 ERA and a
1.421 WHIP.
Agrest batted .429 with nine
RBIs. He also scored seven runs.
Josh Dorfman hit .429. Jonah Peleg
drove in seven runs.
The team’s roster included
14-year-olds Katz, Rubin,
Herskovic, Peleg, Dorfman and
Sheridan; 13-year-olds Heicklen,
Agrest, Bocknek, Jackson Gold,
Jeffrey Johnston and Sam
Garavaglia; and 12-year-old
Goodwin.
“I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention
our two assistant coaches, Scott
Kaplan and Jonah Farabi,” Chesney
said. “They were instrumental in
helping bring this team together and
earn the results on the field.”
