AUGUST 29 • 2024 | 15 J N T he Adult Education Committee at Temple Emanu-El in Oak Park will welcome Barbara McQuade to speak on an important topic as election season nears — how disinformation is sabotaging America. The in-person event at Temple Emanu-El takes place Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. McQuade is a law professor at the University of Michigan, where she teaches courses in criminal law, national security, civil liberties and data privacy. She is also a legal analyst for NBC News and MSNBC. From 2010 to 2017, McQuade served as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan. Appointed by President Barack Obama, she was the first woman to serve in her position. During her tenure, she served as vice chair of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee, and co-chair of its Terrorism and National Security Subcommittee. Before becoming U.S. attorney, McQuade was an assistant U.S. attorney in Detroit for 12 years, serving as Deputy Chief of the National Security Unit. Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, she practiced law at the firm of Butzel Long in Detroit from 1993 to 1998 and served as a law clerk to Hon. Bernard A. Friedman on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan from 1991 to 1993. McQuade will discuss her new book, Attack from Within: How Disinformation is Sabotaging America. The book dissects the tactics of disin- formation, explains why they work and shows how technology is exacerbating the problem. The book uncovers how disinformation is harm- ing democracy, public safety and the rule of law. McQuade also offers some solutions. Susan Genden, Temple Emanu-El’s Adult Education Committee chair, first connected with McQuade through the nonprofit SOAR, the Society of Active Retirees. Genden is on SOAR’s curriculum committee. When the Adult Education Committee was interested in bringing a speaker to the temple two years ago, McQuade was the perfect fit — speaking on the topic of civil liberties after the midterm election in November 2022. “She was outstanding,” Genden says. “She takes questions; she’s extremely infor- mative and an engaging speaker.” Thinking about what they could do to help educate people with another election coming up, for the committee, it only made sense to bring McQuade back. “Our committee wants to help people learn about important concerns such as how they are affected by disinforma- tion and to know that their awareness is important,” Genden says, “Also they can be voices for change, bring people together and strengthen our community and coun- try.” McQuade wants to relay the urgency of raising awareness about disinformation as the election approaches. “This talk will not be about electing a particu- lar person. It will be about truth, democracy and all of the things McQuade values,” Genden says. “We don’t want people spreading lies. We don’t want more division. We don’t want vio- lence,” Genden adds. “In (McQuade’s) book, she gives some possible solutions. Those solutions aren’t going to happen if people don’t have any awareness. It’s going to take people’s voices to get movement on these solutions.” Refreshments will be served at the free event. Register at jlive.app/events/8577. Donations to the Weinstein Adult Education Fund are appre- ciated. She will discuss her new book, Attack from Within: How Disinformation is Sabotaging America.
