igher Hopes! is once again 
partnering with Famous 
Dave’s to provide a Labor 
Day BBQ feast for 1,000 families 
fighting food insecurities in Detroit. 
 Families in the Detroit Head Start 
programs will pick up generous food 
kits on Friday, Aug. 30. Included in 
the kits is everything needed for a 
delicious Labor Day weekend BBQ, 
including pork, spices, sauces, sides, 
Jiffy mix, watermelon, baked beans, 
fresh veggies, ingredients to make 
coleslaw and more. In addition, each 
family will be provided with ener-
gy-efficient light bulb kits, courtesy 
of DTE Energy, to help offset their 

energy bills. 
“This is the second biggest food 
event we host each year, with 
Thanksgiving being our first, and 
we’re pleased to bring it back for 
2024,” says Bill Birndorf, founder of 
Higher Hopes! “This is an incredible 
meal and we’re happy to be working 
with Famous Dave’s. 
 “As always, with any big event like 
this, it’s volunteers that make the 
difference. We’re asking the commu-
nity to support us by giving a couple 
hours of their time to help assemble 
and pass out the food and essentials 
kits. Interested people can email vol-

get involved.” 
Approximately 1.4 million people 
struggle with hunger and food inse-
curities in Michigan, with approx-
imately 400,000 of those people 
being children. Hungry families are 
forced to make difficult choices each 
month, between paying for food and 
paying for transportation, medical 
care, housing and utilities. 
With its expansive growth over 
the years, Higher Hopes! has dis-
tributed close to 2.5 million pounds 
of food, with plans to increase that 

number in 2024. 
“We rely solely on donations to 
support the families in our pro-
gram. To that end, the Fetter Family 
Foundation will be matching all 
donations made before the event 
up to $20,000. This will help us buy 
all the items needed for this event 
as well as the new Blessings in a 
Backpack program, which we have 
expanded for the 2024-25 school 
year. Tax deductible donations can
