O

n July 29, members of the Jewish Bar
Association of Michigan (JBAM) and guests
gathered at Platform 18 in Royal Oak to
explore the subject of whether and when a Jew
should give preference to doing business with a fel-
low Jew — from a Torah perspective.
Rabbi Leiby Burnham, educator at Partners
Detroit, introduced and analyzed the 16th centu-
ry case of Maharam of Padua v. Giustiniani, a case
credited as the origin of copyright law. The attorneys
gathered at the event had the opportunity to intro-
duce themselves, share what they do and the type of
referrals they would most welcome.
