illel Day School’s 2024-25
school year is expected to be
another year of growth and
continued commitment to academic
excellence.
Head of School Dr. Darin Katz
says there’s specifically a few high-
level things the school is excited
about.
The first thing Hillel is looking
forward to, Katz says, is a “strong,
robust enrollment for this year.”
Enrollment is up this year by
about 30 students from kindergarten
through eighth grade. In addition,
Hillel’s Early Childhood Center is

near capacity.
The continued quest for academic
excellence at Hillel will truly be
across the board, Katz says, especially
with a focus on English and language
arts.
“For kindergarten through fourth
grade, we’re going to continue our
curricular development in what’s
called the science of reading. In
grades five through eight, our focus
is on what is called disciplinary
literacy,” Katz says. “That
combination will make that much
stronger of an English and language
arts program from kindergarten

through eighth grade.”
In addition, this year Hillel will be
in the middle of its re-accreditation
process with the Independent
Schools Association of the Central
States (ISACS), its accrediting
organization.
Every seven years, Hillel
needs to go through the
re-accreditation process to
ensure they are satisfying 45
standards of excellence that
ISACS determines is the gold
standard for independent
schools.
As part of that
re-accreditation process, this
coming school year is the year in
which Hillel writes what is known as
its self-study.
“It’s a yearlong process involving
teachers, students and board
members to really take a deep look
at every single aspect of our entire
school,” Katz said. “We write that
self-study by the end of the year and

then in fall 2025, we’ll have a team of
educators from other ISACS schools
come to visit Hillel to complete the
re-accreditation process. That’s big
work for the school this year.”
Last, but certainly not least — this
school year will be highlighted by
Hillel’s continued focus and
support of the State of Israel.
“That’s through supporting
our Israeli families,
Israeli staff members and
continuing to make sure we
foster loyalty, love and an
understanding of Israel for
our students,” Katz said.
This will be Katz’s fifth
year at Hillel.
“I want Hillel to continue to be a
beacon of light in the Metro Detroit
Jewish community, and a place
where parents choose to have their
child receive an outstanding general
studies and Jewish studies education,
which is more important now than
ever.”

Hillel Day School
Continues to Grow

Enrollment is up this year by
about 30 students.
